Updated site software

Post by mdmattin » Thu Dec 27, 2018 1:29 am

The Sketching Forum application software is now up to date, after being several versions behind for some time. Besides improving security and stability there are some new features, which I'm in the process of exploring. One that I think will be a great convenience, but slightly confusing if you're not expecting it, is that the index page showing the three forums now shows the title of, and links to, the latest post, instead of just showing the username of the poster. What's confusing is that the landing page still shows the thread heads, so if the most recent post is down thread, you don't see it at first.
Maybe this is obvious to everyone else, but it confused me the first time.

Thanks for keeping us au courant, Matt.

This "upgrade" is a retrograde step:
1. The old version showed us the number of people who read the thread. You could see instantly how many you would have to scroll back from the last message in the thread to read all the new messages.
2. The old version had a last post button (at the far right of the index page block for that thread), which would take you to the last post on the last page of a long thread, from where you could scroll back if there were more than one new message, which you could see instantly. Now the best you can do from the index page is manually to click the last page in a long thread and then scroll down umpteen messages you've already read.

Most of these "upgrades", once installed, won't let you go back to the previous version.

There are two workarounds quickly to reach the unread posts, which is what one is normally interested in, and which also bypasses the confusion Matt found:
1. Click the "Quick Links" button top left of the landing page, on the dropdown click "Unread Posts", and you'll see a list of unread posts. You have to do this every time you enter the forum, unless you also go a step further with the shortcut in step 2 below.
2.1 When you're on the page of unread posts, copy the URL, and turn it into a direct link on your computer. The code you want will look something like this:

Code: Select all

http://thesketchingforum.org/forum3/search.php?search_id=unreadposts

2.2 On the Mac you can just select the address for unread posts in the address (URL) block at the top of the page and drag it into the Favourites Bar; then, every time you click on it, it will show you just the unread mail in the Sketching Forum.
2.3 Someone else will shortly explain the equivalent action on the PC.

The "last post" button is the up-right-facing arrow in a box.

Thanks, Jim. I also see there's now a replies count in the panel.

Good, I didn't think they would totally abolish a useful feature, but they did move a few things around to keep us on our toes. Anyway, my main motivation for doing the upgrade was security and especially spam protection, which I have now implemented.
I don't know why the spammers think that anyone on this site would be interested in their unsavory merchandise, but spam they do.
I'll be keeping tabs on how it works out, but do please let me know if you see spam getting through or if you encounter any problems with it.
Thanks,
Matthew

I recently did my first post involving file uploads since the upgrade, and was thrilled to see that we can now do batch uploads! Just select the files you want (command-click on mac, ctrl-click on windows) and upload them all at once. Or drag and drop directly into the message box.
One great leap for The Sketching Forum into the second decade of the second millennium!
